SPORTS AT-SNOWDEN JUNIOR

HIGH

FOOTBALL

Sports at Snowden have been very successful this

year. Most of the boys believe that it is due to the fact

of Mr. Johnson's coming here. Mr. Johnson came to us

from Ripley, Tennessee, where he was principal four

years.

Early in September of

1940,

football practice started.

About forty-five boys came out. Not long after practice

had started, Coach Johnson had a pretty good idea of

what the team would be. Someone asked Coach Johnson

then what he thought the team would do, and he said,

"We shall have a good squad if the boys work hard."

After making a few changes here and there, the first game

finally came. It was against Treadwell. The squad went

out on the field with a good spirit. The game was a hard

fought one, with Treadwell finally winning by the score

of

7

to

0.

However, this did not discourage the boys, for

the scores slowly but surely grew better. The rest of the

scores read:

The boys who did not make letters should be given

as much credit as the boys who did the playing, because

they were ready to do anything at anytime.

The letter men were: Tom Smith (end), Don Hitch-.

cock (end),Hall Drake (end),Ed Kubale (tackle),Emmel

(guard), Gerald Malmo (guard), Billy Evans (guard!,

Sandy Kincannon (center),Don Alexander (center),Elwyn

Rowan (back), Jack Callicott (back),Curtis Dean (back),

Billy Williams (back), Louie Hansberger (back), Tim

McGaughran.

Snowden had three "All Memphis" players this year.

The first was Jack Callicott, who was captain, and did

a

fine job of it. Besides that, Jack is one of the better backs

in the conference. He is an excellent punter and passer

and does a fine job in the fullback spot.

The second is Ed Kubale, whose father coaches at

Southwestern College. Ed is an excellent tackle and really

deserves the position on the "All Memphis" team. One

time Ed's courage was shown by his refusing to go out

of the game when he was severely cut during a game.

He stayed in and played a good game.

Last but not least is Louie Hansberger, who was not

on the first string "All Memphis" but made honorable

mention. Louie is an excellent runner, a good defense

man, and a good passer.

BASKETBALL
